Following Darth Maul’s imprisonment by Pre Vizsla, Maul uses his time in jail wisely in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” episode “Shades of Reason” (season 5, episode 15). First, he quickly plots with Savage Oppress that they should use their time in jail wisely:

Darth Maul: “Vizsla has captured the support of his people, just as we planned. However, he is not their anointed leader yet. There is still time for us to put in place a leader under our control.”
Savage Oppress: “Then let us escape, and we shall find one.”
Maul: “Patience. We must move cautiously. By placing us in prison, Vizsla has unwittingly put us in reach of several candidates for his successor.”
Oppress: “Who do you mean, brother?”
Maul: “Vizsla has imprisoned the Duchess here. Other political advisors of hers will be within these walls who will suit our purposes well.”

Once Maul realizes he needs to see whom else is imprisoned, he commands Oppress, “Apprentice, I wish a tour of this facility.” Even just in this line, one gets the sense that Maul didn’t feel trapped in the cell nor that he panicked about being imprisoned.

After Oppress easily bursts through the glass door and walls of their jail cell, they then walk to over to Duchess Satine’s cell:

Darth Maul: “You are the now the former Duchess Satine, are you not?”
Duchess Satine: “What do you want, you monster?”
Maul: “Mm, nothing yet, but I will have a use for you in time. Where are the other leaders of your people?”
Satine: “You should know already. They’ve either sided with Vizsla or have been killed. There’s no one left now but Almec and I, but he’s as corrupt and vile as you.”
Maul: “Really? Hmm. Thank you for being so cooperative.”

In this exchange, Satine inadvertently refers them to Almec, where Maul then converses with him:

Darth Maul: “Almec?”
Almec: “Yes?”
Maul: “I can deliver you from this prison. What was your position in this government?”
Almec: “I am the former Prime Minister. Satine imprisoned me on charges of corruption and conspiracy for using the black market.”

After a brief outburst from Duchess Satine, who warns them that Almec is a murderer (as if it made any difference to either Maul or Oppress), they continue their conversation:

Almec: “What do you want from me?”
Maul: “Mandalore is in need of a Prime Minister.”
Almec: “I thought you were in league with Pre Vizsla.”
Maul: “We were.”
Almec: “Clearly you are powerful, but how can two of you overthrow Vizsla and his supporters?”
Maul: “Vizsla is a soldier and, like every soldier, he is bound by honor. I will challenge him to single combat in front of his men. He will not deny me.”
Almec: “Hmm. If you defeat him, according to the ancient laws of Mandalore, his soldiers will be honor-bound to follow you.”
Maul: “Precisely.”

From this conversation, it is clear that Maul now has a new plan for gaining control back from Pre Vizsla. Maul and Oppress, along with Almec then depart from the prison (off-screen; we don’t actually see it happen, but, if what we had seen before of Oppress’ easily handling of the prison guards is to be any indication, they easily escaped).
