Picking-up right where the previous episode of Star Wars The Clone Wars left off in “Old Friends Not Forgotten”, Ahsoka Tano has both of her lightsabers lit-up in a defensive stance at the beginning of the fantastic episode, “The Phantom Apprentice”, which came out this weekend on Disney+.
“Ahsoka…Tano, is it?” Maul asks. “I can’t say yours is a name familiar to me.”
Ahsoka: “Well, I know you.”
Maul: “Yes, I imagine we have several mutual friends.”
Ahsoka: “I wouldn’t put it that way.”
Maul: “Of course not, but I’m afraid your way of thinking is behind the times. I was certain that Kenobi would have come, himself. Perhaps bring his loyal foal…Skywalker, is it?”
Ahsoka: “Master Kenobi had a more important engagement.”
Maul: “Indeed. I wonder…the moment may be upon us.”
It is interesting to hear Maul tentatively say Skywalker’s name, as he has never met Skywalker, since Maul’s fighting with Kenobi in the Clone Wars have been when he was unaccompanied by Skywalker.
We also see that Maul senses that Kenobi’s more important engagement has to do with the moment of Sidious’ takeover transition, although Ahsoka has no sense of what “moment” Maul is discussing.
At this point, Ahsoka then signals to Captain Rex for back-up, while Maul continues to ask her questions.
Maul: “Why you? Why did Kenobi send you?”
Ahsoka: “Why don’t you surrender, and then we can both go and ask him?”
Maul: “My surrendering? Well, that would be pointless, for, if I am correct, soon the Jedi and Republic will no longer be the controlling interest in the galaxy.”
Ahsoka: “And who will be? You?”
Maul: “No. Darth…Sidious.”
Before the conversation can continue, clone troopers burst in, disrupting Maul’s meeting Ahsoka, causing them to briefly entangle in lightsaber combat, but Maul tells her, “Not yet”, then Force-hurls a clone trooper at Ahsoka and runs off with his Mandalorians.
The next installment of the Darth Maul project is on Maul and Ahsoka gathering intelligence on each other amidst the Siege of Mandalore.
